From Blurry to Clearly: Infant Vision Development

Four days ago, DH brought my attention to the fact that our little one’s vision has changed over time. He reminded me of a time when the little one’s vision was blurred. DH also mentioned that the little one now has very good vision for seeing tiny things on the floor which he tries to pick up and eat. These comments led to another light bulb moment and a little research on infant vision.

According to an article by the American Optometric Association:

At birth, babies can’t see as well as older children or adults. Their eyes and visual system aren’t fully developed. But significant improvement occurs during the first few months of life…..

Mommas, I bet you can remember those first three months of getting really close to the newborn’s face so he/she can get used to your face.

My New Eyes

The little one’s vision development reminds me of seasons when my vision was blurred by sin and I was self-centered instead of God-centered. It was difficult to see God’s big plan and resist the enemy’s lies because my vision was blurred. Looking back, I am shocked by how ignorant, self-righteous, and selfish I was while claiming to be a Christian.

It feels like scales keep falling off my eyes (Acts 9:18) and I have been given new eyes to see what true repentance means, what being a Christian truly means, and Ephesians 1:18 has become my prayer.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.

As Christians, I believe our spiritual eyes are just like infant eyes. Just like a babies have limited vision capabilities until about 12 months and only begin to learn about and understand what they see as they grow, we have limited vision due to our flesh/humanity and we understand as we grow in Christ. It is exciting that God is constantly calling us to see things beyond the natural.

Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.

1 John 3:2 NLT

Someday we will SEE HIM AS HE REALLY IS. That’s something to look forward to. We will not only see God with our hearts and we will not be limited by our flesh. Face to Face we will SEE the one who is LOVE!

PS: DH just told me it is our duty as parents to help our children grow their spiritual eyes and see the world as it is. He said we have to help young children the same way we help our infant with visual development. This article suggests ways you can help your infant with his/her visual development.
