Mom, I am so glad you adopted me

Earlier this year, my son said “Mom, I am so glad you adopted me. We all fit together so perfectly. ”

My biological son, Judah has no idea that he isn’t adopted. In his mind, adoption means you were added to our family and that addition can happen through delivery or the front door.

In a culture where words like biological and half sibling are treated as scary, we are raising our family to see it differently.

Adoption isn’t scary. Open conversations around the topic aren’t dirty. The only way to guide my children through the hurtful comments of others is to teach them how to speak a different language.

Adoption is celebrated in our house because of the family we have been adopted into through Christ.

Ephesians 1:5 ~ God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

One day Judah will connect more dots and realize how wonderful his comment is.

One day our adopted daughters will have more questions. I am not sure what that will look like in a few years, but one thing I am certain of is that questions or topics will never be dismissed or avoided out of my own fear or comfort.

I pray my husband and I are able to lay a foundation of safety that no matter what the topic is, our children are safe to discuss it with us.

I don’t know all the answers, but I do know if you ever need a listening ear regarding fostering or adoption I am available!
