God and the Sex Scandal Lineage

There is something interesting about the women/mothers mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Tamar disguised as a prostitute to have sex with her father-in-law, Rahab was a prostitute, Ruth was a Moabite (a descendant of an incestuous relationship between Lot and his older daughter), Uriah’s wife (nameless in the genealogy, her husband was killed because David impregnated her), and Mary the mother of Jesus was a virgin with no reputation in her society. Wow! God’s ways are not our ways. God saw it fit to inspire Matthew to highlight their names. Their stories were rewritten. This is love, grace and mercy at work. Regardless of our past/history and obscurity, God specializes in making all things work together for the good of those who love Him, those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

What are your thoughts on this genealogy?

      1. Ok. Just wanted want to add to the discussion, in case someone reading didn’t know her name. Also as I stated the reason being is because the Jews had a negative view of women they saw them as property and inferior. For instances, like with the woman at the well, the disciples had a problem with Jesus talking to her because number one she was a woman and number two she was a Samaritan.

          1. You’re welcome woman of God! Unfortunately, you are correct that some societies view women from a chauvinistic point of view. But, the beautiful thing is Jesus broke down many barriers in His ministry, the superiority of the male gender was one of them.

  1. Jesus isn’t afraid to associate with the likes of these women, with the likes of us! As an old hymn puts it “Oh what matchless condescension!” (In the best possible sense of the word!)

    1. Your comment is so beautiful to read. It reminds me of a line in a song “He is not afraid of our story, He turns it all to glory”. Thank you for the thoughtful comment.

  2. I’m thankful that Jesus is no respecter of persons and that He accepts us regardless of our background or family background. His power can even break the bonds of generational curses.

  3. God is very intentional. The fact the Jesus was born to a virgin teenager and carpenter is reminder that God is bigger than our status and accolades. Tamar, Ruth and Rahab are in Jesus’ genealogy to remind us of God intentional redemptive and healing favor and power. Also, God’s word is stronger than the word and judgement of man.
