Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
As I spend more time with the little one, I watch him do things that make me scratch my head. Despite knowing I would not get an answer, I find myself asking him “why are you doing this?”. The little one’s lack of experience places a limit on his understanding. While eating some weeks ago, he suddenly decided to place his spoon on his eyes and head. Occassionally, he puts his little hands close to something hot just to say “hot, hot, hot…..” The little one does not always do what’s safe because his understanding his limited.
Now to the good part…. The little one does not know how to keep malice. When I discipline him, he does not stop coming to me. In fact, he would often run straight into my arms after I discipline him. Sometimes he runs to his father, but he comes back to me like nothing happened. He is quick to forgive and forget. The little one loves like he has never been hurt.
God wants us to be child-like at heart- Quick to forgive, not holding grudges or seeking revenge. We should not be so easily offended.
Becoming men of understanding does not come naturally. That’s why I pray Ephesians 1:17-19:
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.
We cannot truly understand the Bible with our natural mind and there is a lot God wants to reveal to us. May we never get to a point where we think we know all there is to know in God’s word. May the eyes of our understanding be enlightened daily.
