The Russian Grandma

To ensure my busy schedule does not affect the little one’s social and emotional development, visiting parks and going out more often have become a priority. One day at the park, I got introduced to a Russian grandma. Well, I had met this grandma at the park before. She was just sweet and friendly. I did not know she was Russian. Immediately my Italian momma friend told me the grandma was Russian, I suddenly imagined the sweet grandma was a Russian spy. This nice grandma playing with my little one and her grandson was no longer another human like myself. She briefly became a spy in my mind because of my military background, movies I have watched, and my society’s perception of Russia. That was a shame on me. I should not make assumptions about people’s character based on their skin color, nationality, accent, or anything but the fruit they produce.

Perhaps when I tell people I am originally from Nigeria, they think I might be a scammer or a victim of war/poverty. These things are not true about me despite the narrative of the media. Some people feel sorry for me when I do not feel sorry for myself. I do not even see myself as a minority.

The world would be a better place, if we take the time to know people and see through the eyes of love. I am not my skin color, it says nothing about me. I love my new Russian grandma and hope to befriend her soon. Her nationality may shape some things about her but it should not define how she should be treated. We are all humans breathing the same air and we were all made by God.

Acts 17:26~ And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

We have more in common than we think. Check your heart.
