For the first 3 to 4 years of life, humans predominantly function with their right brain (more emotional side of the brain). It takes a while for the left brain (more logical and reasoning side of the brain) to catch up and start communicating with the right brain. For this reason, little children predominantly live based on their feelings- they want what they want when they want it. We must engage in right to right brain communication to help little children make sense of their feelings and situations, and reduce frustration in parent-child relationship. Sometimes, we have to think like a child and enter our child’s world. When we do this, our children feel understood and confident.
Jesus entered our world and experienced what being human feels like. He came down to our level. He experienced pain, temptation, shame, weaknesses, loneliness, betrayal etc. That’s what love does and that’s who love is. Love is Jesus. God is love. Love empathizes.
We can go to our God for help because He understands. Our God does not simply understand our challenges, He solves them. While earthly parents may understand their children’s pain and challenges, they do not always have the power to take away the pain. If they could, they will not hesitate to do so. When our little ones are in pain, we naturally try to fix the problem to the best of our abilities. We do not simply make a sad face, say “ouch”, or say “that hurts” and move on.
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Matthew 7:11 (KJV)
God does more than earthly parents can do for their children. Are you a child of God? God understands what you are going through. Struggling with sin? God understands. Do you want to become a child of God? God understands you as well. God understands us. For this reason, He has invited us to come boldly before Him. We can come to God for mercy, grace, and help in our time of need. We do not have to stay stuck in sin and trouble.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV)
