Church Meeting During a Pandemic

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Hebrews 10:25 (NLT)

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Acts 2:46-47(NLT)

If those physical church doors are open or if there is an opportunity to gather with fellow believers, I will take it. Watching services online is not enough for me, particularly with the little ones.

Many Christians have become lukewarm or left the faith since the pandemic began. Many families do not have access to the internet. What can we say about these situations? My heart grieves for these souls and I pray that churches will open up their doors with complete trust in the God they have always proclaimed to be the healer and miracle worker.

Sometimes, I wonder what this generation of believers would have said about Daniel. I can imagine many saying, oh you are not applying wisdom, you should have obeyed your government, or you think you are better than others.

Daniel 6:10-13 (NLT) says:

But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God. Then the officials went together to Daniel’s house and found him praying and asking for God’s help. So they went straight to the king and reminded him about his law. “Did you not sign a law that for the next thirty days any person who prays to anyone, divine or human—except to you, Your Majesty—will be thrown into the den of lions?”

“Yes,” the king replied, “that decision stands; it is an official law of the Medes and Persians that cannot be revoked.”

Then they told the king, “That man Daniel, one of the captives from Judah, is ignoring you and your law. He still prays to his God three times a day.

Lessons from Daniel:

• Our responsibility is to obey God and God’s Word supersedes governmental laws.
• God’s people must ask God for help. The future of God’s people is not in the hands of governmental figures or political parties. Daniel was the king’s friend but he prioritized seeking God for help.
• God’s Word is the standard and it is the most creative and transformative standard. Hence, we must not change how we pray and worship to suite secular culture.
• We must be brave and courageous in persecution.

To the persecuted believers in the underground church, you motivate me to gather with other believers. Keep gathering! No weapon formed against us shall prosper.

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Luke 12:4-5 (KJV)
