Using Spirituality for Physical Wellness

Today, I am sharing two spiritual practices currently helping me achieve my fitness goals-

Fasting: I know this seems out of place, but it is not. Fasting can help you discover spiritual purposes for healthy living, receive revelations on health and wellness, master your body, and overcome unhealthy eating habits. While people use intermittent fasting for weight loss, this is not what I am suggesting or discussing. Here, I refer to fasting to seek God concerning your health specifically.

Fasting enhances our spiritual consciousness and capacity to receive a higher level of supernatural strength to master whatsoever seeks to control us. Matthew 17:21 (AMP) says, [But this kind of demon does not go out except by prayer and fasting.]”

If overeating seems to be a stronghold in your life, consider fasting to seek God for what you need to do specifically for your health. Whether we believe it or not, how and what we eat can become a snare if we are not intentional about taking charge of our health.

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Isaiah 58:6 (KJV)

Is overeating a yoke for you? Fast if you can.

Also, please pay attention to the spiritual shift that happens when you fast. Isaiah 58:8 (KJV)  says, “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.”

Praying and Studying the Word: As you know, fasting without praying or studying the Word is just a hunger strike. When you fast to break loose from addiction to certain foods or overeating, eat the Word of God. Take time to search the scriptures for truths that will keep you grounded when life events or situations try to draw you back into your old eating habits. God’s Word looks even more different when you pair meditation with fasting.  Prayer is communication with God. As you ask God for wisdom and secrets to healthy living and victory over unhealthy eating habits, God will answer you and give you the wisdom.

Fitness can become an idol without an eternal purpose and spirituality in mind. While serving in the military, my body was my idol, and my sense of worth and identity was rooted in being physically fit. My spiritual and mental health suffered while I worshipped my body. As you pursue your fitness goals, I urge you to hold God in mind. Have spiritual purposes for staying healthy.

If today was your last day on earth, do you know where you will spend eternity? Are you sure you will make it to heaven? If you are not sure, you need to give your life to Jesus Christ. Please say the prayer below and let me know about it here.

Say this: Heavenly Father,
I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe you exist and you sent Jesus to die for me. I receive your love and forgiveness. Reveal yourself to me. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen

Welcome to God’s family!

  1. I love your perspective! Thank you for your insights! And I am a big promoter of fasting.. especially as a spiritual practice! It’s wonderful to see someone who shares a similar perspective.
