A Mother’s Wisdom

On my heart today are the beautiful mothers raising sons, those entrusted by God to shape future leaders, servants, and kingdom-minded men.

As I reflected on Proverbs 31:1-9, the words King Lemuel recalled from his mother stirred me deeply. This wise mother imparted timeless principles to her son that still resonate loudly today—principles we must intentionally pass on to the next generation of men.

Here are a few treasures of wisdom from her instruction:

1. Guard Your Strength and Your Future

“Do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.” – Proverbs 31:3

Not every woman is sent by God. This mother warned her son that some relationships are sent to derail destinies. She taught him to guard his character, heart, and calling.

2. Stay Sober and Discerning

“It is not for kings to drink wine, nor for rulers to crave beer…” – Proverbs 31:4

In positions of leadership, clear judgment is vital. She reminded him that intoxication dulls discernment—a tactic often used to trap the powerful.

3. Walk in Justice and Righteousness

“Lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.” – Proverbs 31:5

She called him to uphold justice, to lead with integrity, and to be mindful of how his choices affect the vulnerable.

4. Be a Voice for the Voiceless

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…” – Proverbs 31:8

A true king, like our King Jesus, advocates for the marginalized. Her words urged him to be bold, compassionate, and righteous.

5. Judge Fairly and Defend the Oppressed

“Defend the rights of the poor and needy.” – Proverbs 31:9

She instilled in him a heart for justice and mercy—two pillars of godly leadership.

The wisdom of this Queen Mother was not just for her son—it’s for us too.

So to every mother of sons:

I’m praying with you and for you. May we teach our sons to walk in wisdom, to love righteousness, and to carry the heart of Jesus as they grow in stature and purpose.

May the words of Proverbs 31 be written on their hearts.

May they become men of character, discernment, and compassion.

And may this wisdom be passed down from generation to generation.

Amen.
