A Holy Wrestle

There are moments in life when God invites us to look beyond the surface, not into a physical mirror, but into a spiritual mirror. These are sacred moments when the Holy Spirit exposes what has been hidden—old habits, buried emotions, and unseen roots that quietly influence how we think, speak, and respond.

Sometimes, we only become aware of these hidden seeds through collision moments, when something unexpected interrupts our rhythm and reveals what lies beneath.

As we discern the times and seasons we are living in, especially in the United States, the Lord is calling His daughters to deep spiritual maturity. What we see happening around us, division, anger, pride, and fear, mirrors what He is purging within His people.

When Collision Reveals What’s Hidden

Not long ago, I experienced what I can only describe as a holy wrestle. I had been intentional, reading the Word, praying daily, and staying disciplined. Then one day, a young woman ran into my car.

No major damage. Thank God. But the real collision wasn’t metal against metal; it was ego against truth.

In that moment, my smile hid a storm. I was angry, deeply angry, and though I didn’t express it outwardly, my thoughts betrayed me. The Holy Spirit immediately convicted me: This is not about the accident. This is about what’s hiding in your heart.

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” — Matthew 12:34

And then I realized something even more sobering: I had been wrestling, not against sin, but against holiness itself. I wanted to justify my anger as righteous, or blame the enemy for causing the incident, but the Lord whispered—

That realization led me into a period of soul excavation—what I now call The Holy Wrestle.

Some days I felt fine. Other days, I grieved the hidden anger that surfaced. I had to ask the hard question:

“Lord, where were these seeds hidden?”

The Internal Enemy

We often talk about vigilance against the external enemy, the devil who prowls around like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8)—but the more dangerous enemy is often internal. The unexamined heart. The unhealed memory. The unchecked emotion.

“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.” — 2 Corinthians 13:5

This is not self-condemnation; it’s Spirit-led transformation. God’s holiness is not meant to shame us; it’s meant to shape us.

When the Holy Spirit reveals what’s hidden, it’s a divine invitation to healing. He exposes in order to restore.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:23–24

Spiritual and Emotional Intelligence in This Season

As mothers, wives, and women of faith, we are called to walk in both spiritual and emotional intelligence.

In an age of high emotions and low discernment, these two must work together. Emotional intelligence without spiritual discernment leads to self-help, but spiritual intelligence without emotional awareness can lead to hypocrisy.

Both are needed for wholeness and witness.

Five Ways to Cultivate Spiritual and Emotional Intelligence

  1. Pause Before You React.
Give space for the Holy Spirit to speak before your emotions do.“Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” — James 1:19
  2. Name the Emotion.
Identify what you feel and invite God into it. David modeled this through honesty in the Psalms.
  3. Invite the Holy Spirit to Interpret.
Don’t stop at awareness, ask for revelation.“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” — 1 Corinthians 2:10
  4. Respond with Grace, Not Guilt.
Conviction leads to cleansing, not condemnation.“Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline.” — Revelation 3:19
  5. Plant New Seeds Daily.
Every uprooted seed of anger, pride, or fear must be replaced with God’s Word.“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.” — Matthew 15:13

Reflection Questions

  1. What recent “collision moment” revealed something unexpected in your heart?
  2. How do you typically respond when the Holy Spirit corrects you?
  3. What emotional patterns do you notice in yourself that may be rooted in unhealed areas?
  4. How can you practice pausing before reacting this week?

Activation: Your Holy Wrestle

Set aside a quiet moment this week to sit with the Lord and inquire of Him:

Pray this prayer:

Father, I welcome Your light into my heart. Reveal what is hidden and uproot every seed not planted by You. Replace it with righteousness, humility, and love. Teach me to wrestle well, with grace, not resistance, and to yield to Your sanctifying work in this season.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Then, take one practical step toward emotional growth—pause before responding to a difficult situation, write a journal entry about what you feel, or share honestly in prayer.

Remember: what God reveals, He intends to heal. The shaking is not meant to destroy you, but to purify you. Let your holy wrestle become your worship.
