The Wisdom of the Wise Woman of Abel: A Warrior’s Strategy

Over the past few weeks, I have contemplated the concept of walking as “Lady Wisdom.” Reflecting on the roots of wisdom, I often cite the book of Proverbs, which teaches that a wise woman builds her house, but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands (Proverbs 14:1). This verse took on new meaning when I recently studied the story of the Wise Woman of Abel in 2 Samuel 20:14–22.

We are living in a time when divisiveness is normalized, and unruly behavior is often celebrated. Yet, tucked within the pages of scripture, we find a gentle giant whose voice shifted the outcome of a siege and preserved a city from ruin. Her story encouraged me to pursue wisdom more deeply, anchoring myself in the truth that “Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding” (Proverbs 14:33 NASB2020).

As we enter this season—one many have sensed as a time of deep intercession and renewed devotion—my prayer is that peace, wisdom, and divine strategy will guide your every step.

May you walk confidently in your sphere of influence, knowing God has already equipped you with everything you need to navigate hard conversations, lead your family well, and positively shape your community.

A Warrior’s Tactic: Peace Through Wisdom

Take note, the Wise Woman of Abel is a woman who saved an entire city without lifting a sword. Instead, she wielded weapons of wisdom, strategy, and diplomacy—powerful tools that God freely gives to those who ask (James 1:5). Let’s break down her actions, which model wisdom in warfare:

  1. She Spoke Up Boldly
When Joab, King David’s military commander, came to destroy the city in pursuit of Sheba, the Wise Woman of Abel didn’t stand by in silence. She called out to Joab, demanding to be heard (2 Samuel 20:16).

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue…” (Proverbs 18:21)

She knew that silence in a moment of crisis could cost everything. This posture is also evident in the review of Queen Esther’s story; however, in this instance, the gentle giant was not part of the monarchy of her time. Nonetheless, triumph often commences when we speak with honesty and bravery, regardless of our social standing.

“They used to say in former times, ‘Let them ask advice at Abel,’ and so they settled a dispute” (2 Samuel 20:18 ESV)
She appealed to logic and legacy, framing her case with dignity and truth. It was wisdom layered with honor.

A wise woman isn’t only known for what she says but for how she inspires others to act in alignment with the truth.

Your Influence as a Warrior of Wisdom

Sisters, being a warrior doesn’t always mean being loud, forceful, or combative. Sometimes, it means sitting still and discerning. Sometimes, it means praying when others panic. Sometimes, it means having the right words at the right time to bring peace and clarity.

Here’s how we can walk in the same spirit of wisdom today:

The Wise Woman of Abel was unnamed, yet her influence was undeniable. Your voice matters. Your prayers matter. Your wisdom, when guided by the Holy Spirit, is a weapon of mass preservation.

This month, I encourage you to:

“Wisdom is better than weapons of war.” – Ecclesiastes 9:18

Blessings and wisdom to you as you lead with grace!
