One of the most astounding responses in Scripture is Christ’s calmness and peace during raging storms. When the disciples panicked as their boat was tossed by the wind and waves, Jesus was asleep. Upon being awakened, His response wasn’t panic—it was a commanding peace: “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39). This posture of assurance is what we are called to emulate. Even King David declared in Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”
These declarations are not born out of denial of danger but are rooted in a deep trust in God’s faithfulness. As believers, we are reminded that God’s blessings often come with opposition. The promises of God are not exempt from challenges, but those very challenges are often what magnify His glory and solidify our faith.
God Shows Up in Times of Trouble

God’s presence in our trials is a consistent theme throughout Scripture:
1. Daniel in the Lion’s Den (Daniel 6): Daniel’s unwavering faith led him into a den of lions, but God shut the mouths of the lions. His deliverance resulted in a testimony that glorified God across the kingdom.
2. The Three Hebrew Boys (Daniel 3): Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood firm in their refusal to bow to Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image. Even when thrown into the fiery furnace, they emerged unharmed because of the presence of the fourth figure—“like a son of the gods.” Their faithfulness testified to God’s power.
3. The Early Disciples (Acts 5, Acts 12): The disciples faced imprisonment, beatings, and even martyrdom, yet they rejoiced for being counted worthy to suffer for Christ. God’s presence was evident as He sent angels to deliver Peter from prison and empowered the disciples to carry the gospel forward.
4. Paul and Silas in Prison (Acts 16): Beaten and chained, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns. Their faith prompted a divine intervention—an earthquake that opened prison doors and led to the salvation of the jailer and his family.
Opposition Precedes Blessing
A former pastor once shared that “the opposition we encounter is often a prophetic sign that God’s power is about to break through. Stay steadfast in faith.” I wholeheartedly agree and have witnessed this truth in my own life. During one season, I was especially resolute in encouraging others to stay fortified, reminding them that “opposition is drawn to opportunity.”
The enemy often rises to oppose the blessings of God, but these challenges refine our faith and deepen our dependence on Him:
– When God declared freedom for the Israelites, Pharaoh’s heart hardened, and their deliverance came through plagues and the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14).
– Jesus’ ministry was marked by constant opposition, but His death and resurrection brought salvation to all who believe.
Count It All Joy
James reminds us: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness” (James 1:2-3). Trials are opportunities for spiritual growth, intimacy with God, and testimonies that glorify Him.
Encouragement from Scripture
Here are scriptures to ignite hope, confidence, and spiritual intelligence during challenging times:
Psalm 46:1-3: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth gives way.”
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
John 16:33: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Hebrews 12:1-2: “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.”

Spiritual Intelligence: A Key to Victory
Spiritual intelligence requires discernment, prayer, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Like the wise virgins who kept their lamps filled with oil (Matthew 25:1-13), we must remain vigilant, prepared, and steadfast in our faith.
Closing Encouragement
As we navigate the terrains of a new year, with its uncertainties and challenges, let us anchor our hearts in the promises of God. Trust that His presence is with you in the fiery furnaces, the lion’s dens, and the storms. Hold on to an expectant hope, knowing that His blessings and glory often shine brightest in opposition.
Be encouraged. Your faithfulness, like that of the torchlighters before us, will be a testimony of God’s unfailing love and power.
