Like one who has lost her soul, I ran away from the one I love. I just could not take it anymore. My body wanted to rest, but a little human was in the way. So, off to the closet I went with my blanket. The quiet and freedom from the needs of another human made an uncomfortable space momentarily comfortable. I heard the little human cry-“mommy, mommy, mommy”. My body and soul were in coherence about one thing- I needed rest and no one in the world must get in the way.
Last night, I was not the mother I always want to be and many times I do not get it right. And that’s okay.
I did not and do not always feel guilty when I don’t get mothering right. And that’s okay.
The most important thing is for our children to have more positive than negative experiences in their relationship with us. It is also important for them to learn that disconnection and disruptions occur, but they can be fixed in many cases. That’s what being a good enough parent is about.
Feeling guilty? Forgive yourself and ask God for wisdom to solve the problem. Feeling guilty about not feeling guilty? Extend grace to yourself.
This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God. 1 John 3:19-21 (NIV)
