WHERE CAN A TINY SEED TAKE ME?

When I was a child, I lived way out in the country where our nearest neighbor was a mile up the dirt road.  That road was often either dusty or muddy.  Looking back, it was, at least in one way, an idyllic existence.  My younger sister, Donna, and I spent countless hours a day playing outside where we investigated every nook and cranny, hoping we would find something new and exciting.  Being curious, we found many interesting places to explore.  Among them were an old tin smokehouse that smelled of smoked hams, a cold dark cellar filled with potatoes, pickled peaches and canned vegetables from the garden, and a run-down garage apartment that was complete with creaky, shaky steps.  There was also a musty-smelling well house where a plethora of cast-off stuff lay, just waiting to be reworked into something useful again!  Many such times, we used our imaginations to fashion fun playthings from our finds.  Once I recall our using an old, empty nail keg to create a make-believe well that we filled with water to supply our play house. Our play house was created under huge snowball bushes where we partitioned spaces, using a stick to make “rooms.”  Later, we found an empty wire spool that became a table for our playhouse kitchen.  There was no end to our having fun with whatever we found.

God wants our lives to be like that—-full of the wonder and excitement of discovering all the more than six thousand promises and eternal principles that He has given us in His Word!

Get excited, and be expectant!  Dare to believe the Truth!  Our Father God wants only the very best possible for you and me, His children.  As any good natural father does, He enjoys blessing us with gifts.  His Word, the Bible, is one of those gifts. Remember how exciting it is when your birthday or Christmas comes?  There in front of your eyes are beautifully wrapped packages whose contents have been carefully selected just for you!   Those gifts are just waiting to be opened.  What a blessing it is to receive these special gifts that give us pleasure in the present! The Bible, however, is the greatest gift possible because it contains eternal Truths, not only for today but for eternity.

THE BIBLE IS GOD’S GIFT TO YOU AND ME!

An unwrapped gift has no benefit for us when its contents remain a mystery.   Once we discover the gift inside the box, we can appreciate its value only as we use the gift for its intended purpose.  The Word of God is like that wrapped present.  But it only comes alive in us as we open and discover its rich principles and timely promises. Remember how you feel when you are opening a present?  There is a high level of expectation and curiosity.  Father God wants you and me to experience that same excitement as we open the spiritual gift of His Word.  Then, we can apply those principles and promises that can transform our lives, both for this life and for eternity.  However, just as with any natural gift, we only reap the benefits from its contents as we receive and use them for their intended purpose.

  1. Your description of the Bible as an unwrapped gift when not opened, read, and used appropriately is such a fitting analogy. Praise God for the gift of His Holy Word! 🙂

  2. Praise the Lord! I love the analogy used as well. Reminds me of the parables often used by Jesus. Thank you for your comment Nancy!
