I have been intentional to guard my children from any word spoken against them, and yet in that moment I was the one speaking negative. I know that this is easily a situation where you can get hyper “religious” but for me it was eye opening.
Some may argue that my attempts are futile as she cannot understand what I am saying. However does that stop parents from talking to their babies? Isn’t it from our talk, describing the world around them and constantly telling them who daddy and mummy is that our baby’s first words come from those s/he hears the most. We are already training our babies in so many areas: eating, using a car seat, table manners, talking, walking, biting is bad and so on.

When I moved to the U.S. in my late teens, I desperately wanted to change my accent. I wanted to fit in. I didn’t like my accent despite people telling me “I love your accent” several times. They often follow the compliment with “where are you originally from?”. That’s the question I didn’t like answering. I would have to tell them I am originally from Nigeria but I didn’t want to. That was the problem and motherhood solved the problem.

I heard the sound of a fall while making my way back to the room. My heart sunk. It started beating fast but I couldn’t and didn’t panic……….Perhaps, choosing not to panic or express fear as a new mom is God’s strategic way of preparing me to live fearless in every area of my life.
This past weekend, I visited a sister-friend who gave birth to a baby boy three weeks ago. She shared her concern about raising a child in this cold/evil world. I had the same fear and concern in July, so I could relate. We discussed the fact that our generation is faced with raising children in a more complex world compared to generations before us.
