When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Matthew 2:9-11 (KJV)
A star was used as a tool to lead the wise men to Jesus. They were wise enough to worship the King instead of the star. So, it is foolish to worship the universe instead of the God who created the universe. Also, the wise men worshipped God with their bodies and earthly treasures. Only the wise present their bodies as living sacrifices to God and worship God with their earthly treasures (Romans 12:1; Proverbs 3:9)
Creation points to the existence of the highest power. God created the stars to reveal his majesty. Why would anyone seek the stars instead of the one who created the stars?
Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name. Amos 5:8 (KJV)
There are two types of seekers- those who seek the creator and those who seek the creation. If I find myself seeking the stars or interpreting my life through astrology, I am not seeking the highest power.
Are you seeking the creator of the universe or the universe? Are you seeking God’s approval or man’s approval? Are seeking to become one with nature or the one who created nature?
Choose wisdom.
Regarding Jesus, Luke 2:51 (NLT) says, “Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.” Joseph and Mary were responsible for parenting Jesus. They modeled how to train up a child in the way he should go. In this plan, Temi Michael-O shares lessons from Joseph and Mary’s journey to parenthood.
